The Smoking Habit
Remember when you learned to drive a car? In the beginning, driving required your full focus and attention. Paying attention to the steering wheel, the rear view mirror, and other people on the road. Then there’s the the brake, gas pedal, and the scrutiny of the person next to you in the passenger seat. Speeding up and slowing down felt jerky and awkward.
After a few weeks of driving, it becomes effortless, almost mindless. It’s like a PART of you learned to take over and drive the car automatically.
Driving NOW, you listen to the radio, daydream, and think about work. You don’t give driving a second thought! Yet, you still get to your destination safe and sound.
That’s your unconscious mind at work. By performing actions with consistency and repetition, you create neural networks. These networks allow you to perform behaviors without much conscious effort.
Your First Cigarette
Remember your first cigarette? You were probably a teenager hanging out with friends. Somebody offered you a cigarette. You put it in your mouth, lit up, and it tasted terrible!
Every cell of your body pushed back. The noxious smell, the acid taste, and the inhalation of poisonous vapor into your lungs. There is NOTHING addictive about that first drag on a cigarette!
Yet, you continued to smoke. Did you think it looked cool? Did you want to fit in with your friends? Either way, you persisted. Smoking became an automatic, habituated behavior.
The “Smoking Part” of You
Over time you created an unconsconscious PART of you that compels you to smoke. It’s a neural network dedicated to running your smoking habits and behaviors.
Your unconscious mind is a faithful servant. It created the smoking PART to be consistent with your conscious decisions. Your initial decisions to smoke over and over again.
This is neuroplasticity. We’re always rewiring the brain every time we learn or engage in something new.
Every time we engage in a pattern, we’re building up neural networks that keep the pattern together. It’s like a muscle that grows stronger from regular exercise.
